March is here, folks! Who is still going strong with their New Year’s resolutions? Kudos to you if you are still on track. Spring Break is quickly approaching and summer is right around the corner, so we figured that some of you may be in need of some motivation to stay on track with those healthy living resolutions. A little extra motivation never hurt anybody, am I right? One key ingredient to healthy living is developing healthy habits that can be incorporated into our daily routines. So, let’s talk about some healthy habits that can keep you on track to living a healthier lifestyle!
Drink water – lots of water
I know, I know – this one is no secret. We all know that we need to be drinking plenty of water each day. But did you know that there are certain times of day that drinking a glass of water can be especially beneficial?
- Right when you wake up – Drinking a glass of water right when you wake up kick-starts your metabolism for the day.
- Before each meal – Drinking a glass of water right before each meal of the day can leave you feeling full, causing you to consume less food during each meal.
- Right before bed – Drinking a glass of water right before you go to bed leads to a healthier digestive system, aiding in proper digestion throughout the night.
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day
There is a lot to be said for the benefits of sticking to a sleep routine, and any other routine really. When you go to bed and wake up around the same time every day, you are training your body to operate like clock-work and everything starts to run more smoothly. Give it a try and see how much better you start to feel!
Wear sunscreen daily
This is a big one, especially considering the area that we live in. You may be thinking, “Do I really need to wear sunscreen during the winter?” Well, it certainly can’t hurt, and here’s the thing about forming a habit – you have to do it consistently in order for it to become a natural part of your routine. So, if applying a light coat of sunscreen every day, even on the cloudy or chilly days, keeps you from forgetting it on those blistery sunny days, then mission accomplished! Your undamaged skin (and your dermatologist) will thank you later.
Start your day with a healthy breakfast
There is a reason why you have heard so many times in your life, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” That’s because it is! Starting the day with a healthy breakfast not only jump starts your metabolism, but it sets the tone for healthy eating for the remainder of the day.
Get outside and walk – or dance
Even if it’s just for 15 minutes a day, incorporating a daily walk into your routine has so many health benefits. Simply spending 15 minutes a day outside, surrounded by fresh air is beneficial, but if you can add in raising your heart rate for a quick walk, it becomes even MORE beneficial.
What to do on those rainy days? Turn up the music and DANCE. We’re not suggesting that you dance in the rain (although we aren’t saying that’s a terrible idea), we’re simply suggesting that you turn on some music and dance around the house. In fact, make it a family affair! You’ll be surprised at how much satisfaction you will get from 15-30 minutes of letting loose and dancing out your exercise for the day – it may even become a new habit.
